Academic Tutoring

My academic tutoring teaches you to teach yourself.

I give lessons in math, reading and writing, history, and more. But what I’m really teaching you is how to deal with school: finding out what teachers want, discovering the discipline to study before a big test, doing efficient yet accurate research for a paper or project, and getting the most out of every reading assignment and lecture. With me, you’ll learn how to learn.

When you learn how to learn, you learn not just one subject, but all of them. You become your own teacher, able to judge a context or situation for yourself. You develop your own sense of style and methods for accomplishing your objectives. You free up time and energy to devote to the things that interest you—which also become easier to improve, and easier to master.

“Chris is an awesome math and SAT tutor! He’s been tutoring our teenage daughter for two years in math … he relates well to teens, and he’s great at honing in on whatever she needs help with. If you want to make math homework stress-free for you and your student, it’s well worth the money!”

What We Offer

Math—Algebra and Geometry

With a good teacher, every math class could be aced by a majority of students—yet many struggle with the subject. It’s not their fault; math is often taught poorly. New books force students to adopt methods that don’t fit their style, creating more problems than they solve. Often, explanations confuse instead of clarifying.

Math shouldn’t be a cause of anxiety and frustration, but confidence and discovery. I’ll help get you there.

I’ve taught everything from Algebra through Calculus. I was a mathlete, earning a free trip to Chicago to compete in a national competition, as well as a 5 on the Calculus AB, Calculus BC, and Statistics AP tests, and an 800 on the SAT math.

My lessons are tailored to your pace and style of learning. I teach the material so you can understand it, use it, and remember it—for use on the next test, final, or math class down the road.

Reading and Writing

Mastery of reading and writing is more critical than ever before. College admissions are increasingly competitive and subjective, based on the essay. Academic papers are stressful, time-consuming and difficult. Writing and reading well are marketable skills. But few possess them, especially in today’s schools—which emphasize science and math over language. What’s to be done?

I’ll help you put your best thoughts in the best words, applying my personalized teaching methods to help you overcome writer’s block, in challenging genres from term papers to lab reports. We’ll identify the assignment, gather the facts, fit them into an outline, and write the paper—a process that works for everything from short responses to college essays.

With the Seattle area welcoming such a diverse and inspirational community of immigrants, I’m also pleased to teach ESL students.

In addition to my writing credentials, I scored an 800 on the SAT Reading and a 770 on the Writing (when the section was scored that way).

Other Subjects

I have some knowledge of many other subjects—mainly physics, world history, political science, music theory, and journalism—and can offer incidental help with these, ideally in addition to lessons in SAT, ACT, math or English.

For more in-depth looks at those topics—and many others—I’m happy to refer you to one of my excellent colleagues.
