College Counseling & Admissions-Essay Editing

My college-counseling services offer pragmatic and decisive solutions to an increasingly competitive process. I’ll help you find your dream school, then do my best to get you in.

As a public-school senior, I was admitted to Penn, Pomona, the University of Chicago, and Columbia, where I matriculated before graduating in three years. The strength of my application went beyond test scores and GPA: my college essay, which detailed my newspaper column that changed my high school’s curriculum, also got me into the Penn honors program. Since then, I’ve written for the Columbia Spectator, the Seattle Times, the Daily Dot, Kotaku, and several other large publications.

I enjoy using my talent and experience as a writer to help my students express themselves—and realize their dreams, too.

My comprehensive college-admissions services include college counseling and admissions-essay editing.

College Counseling

How do you decide where to apply to college? High-school counselors are often overwhelmed, and independent ones haven’t been on campus for decades! Once you decide, how do you begin chipping away at all the forms, activity sheets, financial-aid applications, and letters of recommendation? I’ll take you through the process from start to finish, using my …

Familiarity

with the modern application. Colleges present the process as if it’s self-explanatory, which it isn’t. Newcomers—almost everyone!—must navigate confusing websites and opaque prompts. I’ll help you organize and execute.

Experience

with a diverse clientele. Other counselors tend to cater to a single demographic. I went to a public high school and have worked with students of different ability levels, who desire different things out of life—and college. With me, you’ll go to the college you want to go to.

Knowledge

of colleges and how they fit with personality types. In addition to 5 years’ experience counseling juniors and seniors, I’ve also visited friends and family at over 20 colleges, including some of the most prestigious schools in the nation. I was a college student myself less than a decade ago, too—so I know what works for different students.

I don’t know if Chris got me into Whitman, but he definitely helped. Admissions are so competitive, and I saw a lot of friends get frustrated. Not me—I learned a lot from the beginning of the application process, all the way to getting into my dream school.”

College-Essay Planning and Editing

The personal statement is one of the most crucial—and intimidating—pieces of the modern college application. In such a competitive environment, numbers by themselves often aren’t enough. An excellent essay is the best way to stand out from the pack. I can help you craft an eye-catching narrative with a strong structure. Here’s how:

My five-step composition and editing process.

I’ll begin by helping you brainstorm topics. We’ll then work together to draw out ideas and themes, write an outline, compose a draft, and finally pare it down to size. Extending the process over multiple sessions gives you the time and context to accumulate ideas, which we can refine, step by step, on Google Docs—remotely or in-person. Start with me and we’ll end up with 650 words densely packed with stories, observations, and allusions that show off your best qualities. Or, if you’re already partway through the process, we can pick up where you left off.

Help with shorter essays.

Many students hastily dash off the 150- to 300-word essays at the end of an application. Big mistake—admissions officers look at these, too, and if you haven’t given the pieces the attention they deserve, committees will judge you less interested in their school. Instead, I’ll help you communicate as many ideas as possible within their challenging constraints.

Packages

I offer flexibility in payment plans and scheduling. Most full-package students start with me before or during junior year; those looking for just college research and/or essay help can start as late as the beginning of senior year.

With an initial $500 deposit, you get access to my students’ best college essays from the past few years, as well as access to me during my working hours—as long as I’m not with a student.

Hourly services also available.

Chris is not only an amazing, brilliant tutor, skilled in all academic areas, he also made learning enjoyable and fun for my daughter. He was very knowledgeable in SAT preparation and helped her do her best on the test. After the SAT, he worked diligently with her on her college applications. Before, she was struggling in school, due to her decade-long autoimmune disorder. The application process intimidated her and made her feel like she was hopelessly behind, and the entire family was feeling overwhelmed.

"When my daughter and I first met Chris, he looked us in both in the eye and told us that my daughter was going to get into college. The outcome was, in fact, much better than that. Because of his profound tutoring skills, she was accepted to every school she applied to!

I highly recommend Chris to everyone.”

Chris helped me gain a better appreciation for Calculus and Physics through his engaging tutoring style. As the captain of my crew team in high school, I always had a busy schedule, but Chris was so flexible with scheduling and always available for questions through email, which helped enable my success in classes through senior year. He is an enthusiastic tutor and relatable mentor who makes learning very exciting and easy."

"I loved working with Chris. He really helped me figure out where I wanted to go to school and in a way who I was. I enjoyed our weekly meetings and the support on crafting the perfect college application. He really understands teenagers and I always looked forward to chatting with him. He was a big help with the whole college application process (that I knew nothing about). Honestly, better than therapy 🤣

Mr. Morris-Lent’s expectations were clear and the SAT study exercises he assigned fit right into our daughter’s extremely busy junior-year schedule. She saw her results improving within weeks, and was motivated to study throughout the year.

Our daughter’s SAT score soared by 500 points!

Mr. Morris-Lent recognizes the importance of his role as a "guiding force" in influencing the educational endeavors of his students. He is innately gifted in his ability to connect with his students and their families. Mr. Morris-Lent’s dedication and integrity towards helping students bring the best in themselves to the fore is noteworthy.

We unequivocally recommend Mr. Morris-Lent’s tutoring services to others.”
